The inspiration for the Rollerback Rocker came from Timothy's disinterest in traditional armchairs. He wanted to create a seating design that would allow users to have more control and adjustability. The freely moving cushions on the chair enable users to rock back and forth, as well as roll their back into the cushions for added comfort.
What sets the Rollerback Rocker apart from other chairs is its combination of materials. The metal frame is accented with hand-cut walnut inserts, which not only add a detailed accent but also allow for less severe angles than a pure metal frame. The leather cushions provide a luxurious touch and allow users to adjust and roll the cylinders as they please, creating a unique and personalized seating experience.
In terms of production, the Rollerback Rocker features a welded metal frame with hand-cut walnut accents. The walnut inserts slot into the frame and are attached with set screws, requiring meticulous attention to detail. The legs are attached with a Festool domino joiner, ensuring stability and durability. The cushions are sewn with leather, adding a touch of elegance to the design.
With dimensions of 570 mm x 570 mm x 920 mm, the Rollerback Rocker is designed to provide both comfort and style in any space. Its unique interaction allows users to rock forwards and backwards, as well as up and down. The cylindrical cushions can spin on their mounting rods, providing continuous adjustability while seated.
The Rollerback Rocker was designed and realized in San Francisco, with the project starting in October 2020 and finishing in June 2021. Throughout the design process, Timothy focused on precise geometry and attention to detail, ensuring that the chair's angles and proportions were just right. The walnut inserts proved to be the most challenging aspect of the project, requiring the chair to be welded together with the insert in place, leaving no room for error.
Overall, the Rollerback Rocker is a testament to Timothy Hardman's dedication to creating innovative and functional furniture designs. This chair allows users to have a more active role in their seating experience, providing both comfort and freedom of movement. The combination of metal, walnut, and leather adds a touch of sophistication to any space, making the Rollerback Rocker a standout piece of furniture.
Awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2022, the Rollerback Rocker has been recognized for its well-designed, practical, and innovative features. This prestigious award is given to creations that meet professional and industrial requirements, integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics. The Rollerback Rocker's fulfillment and positive impact contribute to a better world.
